Telling

Telling explores connections between improvised dance phasing and Irish Sign Language, as well as non-verbal avenues towards shared movement languages.
Telling is a dedicated research period exploring convergences between dance, speech & sign
language. With solo investigations & a collaborative residency we look at inherent connections at the source of these forms as well as their potential merging/ inter-relating.
Approached with an interest in how multiplicity in modes of communication within creative processes, opens pathways, deepening & expanding understanding and perceptions. Also the potential for one mode to inform another, i.e. how signing sheds light on expressive possibilities of hands & face; elements less prevalent in contemporary dance. Sign is explored as an expressive medium beyond linguistics, deconstructing & reimagining as rhythmic, atmospheric & poetic layers.
With a wonderful team, including deaf interpreter, chairperson of Irish Deaf Society, deaf activist & deaf artist, Lianne Quigley, artist and activist Maryam Madani of Disability Power Ireland, and founder of inclusive dance company Compass Dance UK, Gaelin Little, Telling is a fantastic opportunity to openly explore possibilities in this area both in terms of artistic potential, integrating access and innovation in structures for greater inclusivity in performance contexts.
